MALAYSIAN WINNING INVASION
15 February 2010

Last season’s Urban Melbourne Cup on Wheels saw the trophy head overseas, well sort of, for the first time, when Malaysia’s Josiah Ng took the honours.

Like the rest of the Malaysian track team Ng is based in Melbourne and has had a big impact on local racing. When they first arrived, many thought the Malaysians would be easy beats and early on they often were.

But a lot has changed.

The Malaysians have regularly been getting the better of the Australian track sprinting stars and now have world renowned reputations.

At last year’s world championships Azizul Awang took silver in the sprint. The best of the Australians was Shane Perkins in fourth.

In the 1km time trial Rizal Tisin won the bronze, while Scott Sunderland was the best of the Australians in fifth.

Seeing the Malaysians perform so well on the world stage may not quite be Cool Runnings conquering the Winter Olympics but the perception of easy beats has well and truly turned 180 degrees to now being ‘the hard to beats’.

Revolution 6 and the 73rd Urban Melbourne Cup on Wheels will be the last big hit out for the Melbourne based Malaysians before they head to the World Championships in Copenhagen.
