URBAN MELBOURNE CUP ON WHEELS
10 February 2010
The feature race of Revolution 6 will be the 73rd edition of the Urban Melbourne Cup on Wheels.
It’s the strength of the honour roll, which includes one of the all time greats Sid Patterson winning the race three years running between 1961 and 1963, that makes this one of the biggest prizes on the Australian track cycling calendar.
Arguably Australia’s best ever track cyclist, Danny Clark, won from scratch in 1973 and just one year before winning Olympic gold Dean Woods claimed the Melbourne Cup on Wheels in 1983 as a junior, then again in 1989.
In one for the lovers of cycling trivia Bradley Wiggins’ father Gary took the honours in 1976.
In more recent history it has been the young talent the race has highlighted that has been its most significant contribution to Australian cycling.
As a 16-year-old Brett Lancaster won the race in 1996 and has since gone on to claim Olympic gold in Athens, the leader’s jersey in the Giro d’Italia after winning the prologue in 2005 and is now considered one of the best leadout men in the world.
But the most significant win may have come in 2005 when Leigh Howard, who was also just 16, got the better of the then reigning Olympic sprint and keirin champion Ryan Bayley.
If you ever listen to Kevin Bartlett talking cycling on SEN 1116 you’ll regularly hear him talk about Leigh Howard. The 403 game AFL legend was there the night Howard won and has been singing his praises ever since.
Last season the race was won by Malaysia’s Josiah Ng so who could the 73rd edition of the Urban Melbourne Cup on Wheels uncover?
