MEARES COUNTS DOWN TO BEIJING
23 May 2008

Track fans won’t need to wait until the Olympics to get their fix of board racing, with the “Farewell to Beijing” themed Revolution 3 at Vodafone Arena on Thursday 12 June set to be a crucial final domestic hit out for our track stars.

Less than a month before her a pre-Olympic fitness test over a flying 200m sprint at Revolution 3, Athens gold medallist Anna Meares has declared that she is “back to normal” after her horror world cup crash in America in January.

Meares, 24, who revealed at the time of the crash that she was millimeters away from becoming a quadriplegic, has been told she must ride faster than 11.77 seconds for the flying 200m at Rev 3 otherwise her dream of capturing her second Olympic gold medal will be over.

"It is a gettable time, considering my personal best is 11.10," she told the media at the announcement last week that Melbourne has won the right to host the UCI Track World Cup in Melbourne for the next three years (see story below).

"But in saying that, I haven't done a time trial since I crashed and I've only been working on my strength phase at the moment, so the speed aspect is lacking, and that is something that I'm going to need to work on in the next four weeks to make sure that 11.77 does get done."

Selection in the team would cap off an amazing comeback for Meares, who was seriously injured when she came off her bike at the LA World Cup.

She missed the world titles in March as she focused on rehabilitating her fractured C2 vertebra in her neck and severe shoulder injuries, the Olympic 200m sprint bronze medallist receiving a lifeline when international results at the championships fell in her favour, providing an opening on the start line for the women’s sprint in Beijing (the 500m time trial which she won in Athens is no longer an Olympic event).

"It's been a long, tough road, especially when the team left for the world championships and I had to train in Adelaide on my own. You don't realise how big a velodrome is until you're the only one in it."

"My first thoughts were wheels slipping and going back down again and that was the first thing Marv (coach Martin Barras) made me do … make sure that I felt the wheels slip and make sure that I got in close riding with people and get over that really quickly. I didn't want to have that hinder me for the next six months."

"I'm definitely faced with a challenge and I've given my opponents a head start. But my expectation for Beijing is to go in there and get it right and if I get it right the result should follow," she said. "Two months post that June competition, I'll be flying."

Training partner and dual Olympic gold medallist Ryan Bailey revealed at the launch that Meares was flying and barring any unforseen setback, would easily dip under the required time.

“The boys are all struggling to get past Anna at training. She won’t say so herself, but she’s flying,” Bailey said.

"Usually, if you can't beat a girl in training you should hang up your bike," Bailey joked. "She's supposed to be injured!"

For his part, Bailey admitted that he is ahead of schedule for Beijing and will use the Revolution 3 event to sharpen up his racing skills after a heavy block of training.

The third edition of the Revolution series will once again turn on a show for cycling fans, when members of the Australian track cycling team take to the boards at Vodafone Arena for their final hit-out on home soil prior to the Beijing Olympics.

The Australian team will depart soon after Revolution 3 for their pre-Beijing training camps in Germany and Italy.

Following on from the sell-out at Revolution 2 in December, the third installment of the Revolution series in Australia will be just as exciting and innovative.
