CHOPPER OUT TO PROVE A POINT
25 February 2010
If you were to choose a theme song to capture the career of Joel Leonard, or Chopper as he is affectionately known, it would most likely be U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”.
After representing Australia at the 2006 and 2007 world championships, Leonard has consistently been on the brink of gaining a regular spot in the Australian team but hasn’t quite managed to lock it in. And with the recent announcement of the long list for the squad to go to this year’s world championships he has missed out once again.
At the recent Australian Track Championships he won the 1km time trial for the second time, which sits alongside his two wins in the keirin in 2005 and 2007, he must be frustrated.
Regardless of his selection or non-selection on Australian teams the work ethic and tenacity of Leonard has to be admired. He’s not one to surrender easily.
When he takes on the Australian sprinters selected for the world championships at Revolution 6 he’ll be out to prove a point to the Australian selectors. And as all of his rivals know that is when Chopper is at his most dangerous.
